Kaytee, a Central Garden & Pet brand, is recalling two products, Kaytee exact® Hand Feeding Formula Baby Birds and Kaytee exact® Hand Feeding Formula Baby Macaw, due to high levels of vitamin D. These products are used primarily by bird breeders for feeding baby birds. Baby birds being fed the formula may run the risk of kidney failure when ingesting the product.

The products being recalled were manufactured over a limited range of dates. Products manufactured prior to these dates and after these dates have been tested and are safe for feeding to baby birds. Consumers should inspect the product packaging for the “Best Before Code (date)” to determine if it is affected by this recall. All distributors have been notified of the recall and have been asked to reach out to their retail customers and to immediately remove the affected products from the shelf.

Keeping pet birds is a popular choice among many people the world over and quite a few people keep them in addition to the usual pet dog or cat. Here is what you will need to care for parrots and cockatiels.

Let us begin with the care and attention parrots need. Parrots are part of a very large bird family that includes cockatiels, conures, cockatoos, macaws, lovebirds, parakeets, budgies, lorries and more. The smallest parrot is roughly 3.5 inches and the largest about 39 inches in length. Parrots have long been considered a popular pet, but in the 1930s they fell foul of man when it was found they were transferring psittacosis a viral disease. Thankfully, it was soon discovered that other birds did so as well, so their popularity rating shot right back to the top.

Diet is critical for a parrot’s good health and general well being. In fact a well fed parrot is a happy parrot. Parrots eat a wide variety of foods including bird seed and food pellets. The aim is to provide the bird with well balanced, nutritious feeds. Getting the parrot to try other foods can sometimes be challenging, but is possible. Presentation of the food has to be done in a variety of interesting ways that present a challenge to the bird.

Parrots are very intelligent and need a lot of mental stimulation. They can be taught to speak and enjoy imitating words and other sounds. Watch out for your bird, it may be able to open the lock on the cage! Lack of proper mental stimulation can cause the bird to exhibit common behavior problems.

The birds enjoy a great deal of petting and fussing and love being the center of attention. Your parrot is quite capable of living anywhere from 50 to 80 years, so enjoy your pet parrot to the full.

We will now move on to the care and attention needed for cockatiels. These birds are more commonly referred to as tiels. They are part of the parrot family and came originally from Australia. Measuring approximately 12 inches in total length from beak to tail the cockatiel is a wonderful pet bird to have. In captivity the birds are known to live anywhere from 10-20 years.

If you are looking for a pleasant and sweet tempered bird you couldn’t do better than to raise a cockatiel. It is very even tempered, curious and inquisitive in nature. The birds love bonding with their owner and demonstrate excessive amounts of affection. The cockatiel is intelligent and very social and enjoys being in the company of humans.

Keeping the cockatiel stimulated, well fed and loved will in turn provide you with a lovely companion for a long time. You will have quite a few color choices when selecting the cockatiel colors include white, yellow, pearl and cinnamon. Of course due to mutation and breeding new colors emerge on a regular basis so there’s plenty of choice for would be pet bird owners.

Feeding the cockatiel is important as its life depends on being fed a healthy diet. Seeds are an integral part of the diet, but should not comprise too large a portion of the diet due to the high fat content. In fact experts recommend only 30 percent of the diet be made up of seeds. Pellet feed sold commercially is a good nutritionally balanced choice. Plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables but you will need to be patient with the bird to get it to try new foods. Hard boiled egg, legumes and bits of cooked meat give the bird the proteins it needs. Do not feed your bird avocado, chocolate, onions and other poisonous foods.

Cockatiels love to play and are quite active. Make sure to let the bird out of the cage daily for exercise, play, exploration and freedom to stretch its wings. The bird being small in size and very affectionate is easy to care for.

Wild parakeets are being culled because they are a threat to Britain’s native wildlife, the government has said.
The green, yellow and grey monk parakeet, which is native to South America, is also causing damage to crops, according to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).

Only 100 to 150 of the 30cm-tall bird live in the UK, mainly in the home counties, but the decision has been taken to exterminate them.

A Defra spokeman said:

“Where possible the control measures will mean trapping the birds and rehousing them safely, or moving their nests.

“Only if these measures are unsuccessful or not appropriate will a culling of some Monk Parakeets be considered.”

Unlike its relative the ring-necked parakeet, which is the UK’s only naturalised parrot, the doomed species builds huge communal nests.

In this article we turn the spotlight on budgerigars and finches to provide readers with all the information necessary for the care of these birds. Keeping birds as pets is a heartwarming experience; birds make wonderful companions with their high levels of intelligence and social nature.

We will take a look at the budgerigars first in our article. Budgie or parakeet is the other common names by which the bird is known. Originally from the grasslands of central and south Australia, Budgies are small birds measuring 8 inches or so in total length from beak to tail. The birds typically live anywhere between 5-9 years, but reaching their teens is not unheard of.

The budgie is a very happy bird and one that enjoys play and exploration. The bird loves and needs human companionship but in contrast is also rather independent as well. Novice bird owners would do well to choose budgies for pets first time around. Budgies can become uncooperative in a flock environment and this is not suitable if you wish to form a really strong bond with the bird.

Budgies are colorful with their striped green and yellow colors, dark green or blue feathers. The lovely colors only enhance the liveliness of the bird. In captive breeding the birds have produced a very wide variety of rainbow colors. You will be able to determine the sex of the bird from the coloration of the cere or nose. In mature males the cere turns bluish purple and in the female species it turns tan or brown in color.

You will find most commercial diets for budgies consist of seeds, but don’t make the mistake of giving your bird an all seed diet. Budgies need right feeding as do all other birds and along with the seeds you should give them food pellets. The pellets have vitamins and other nutrients your bird needs, which are not present in seeds. Talk to your vet before feeding the bird any kind of additional supplements. In addition to seeds and pellets, give your budgie fresh fruit and vegetables that include apples, grapes, greens and broccoli among others.

Cages for budgies should not be too small; though the bird is small it does need a lot of space as it is a very lively bird. Make sure to let your pet out of the cage every day for some exercise and exploration. Always secure the area well before you let the bird out to stretch its wings.

We will now turn our attention to the care of finches. These absolutely beautiful birds are lively and very easy to care for. Finches have long been considered a very popular pet and today finding finches to keep as pets is nowhere as difficult as it used to be at one time.

Finches unlike budgies are not too big on social interaction and prefer instead to be in the company of fellow birds. While you can keep one finch as a pet, bird experts do not recommend doing so. The birds enjoy visual contact with people but would rather not be handled too often. You can talk to the bird and even whistle to it and it will be quite happy to just be. Don’t expect the finch to talk or turn tricks – it simply will not!

The minimum size of cage for a finch should be 15 inches in height and 12 inches in length. More is always better because birds should always have the maximum possible space they can. You will need to provide perches of varying widths and textures to help keep the bird’s feet healthy. Location of the cage is an important consideration; put the cage far from open windows, kitchen area, drafts and too much bright sun.

You can provide clean grass or straw inside the cage. If you plan on having more than one bird and you should the cage should be large enough for them to fly around in. A long cage is better than a high one for finches.

As with the budgies, even though finches eat seeds so do all birds. But the simple truth is seeds do not provide the vitamins and nutrients the bird needs. You can also feed your birds pieces of lettuce, grapes, hard boiled egg pieces and more. Experiment a bit and you will soon be able to identify what the birds like and also have a chat with your vet for guidance.
